Al-Rassam Al-Arabi is a Persian poet, born in India, who lived in Iraq. He was one of the pioneers of love poetry. As for his poetic style, it is characterized with usage of metaphors that are plentiful and rich, vibrant imagery accentuated by sensuousness and power. The themes explored in his poetry include love between humans and God, the pleasure of illicit pleasures without consequences, deeds done to please God among other spiritual themes appealing to Jahili society. The literary style developed during this period resonates also with classical Iranian traditions introduced by Ferdowsi's Shahnameh (Book of Kings). Rassam's poetry was an evolution of the poetry style that appeared in the pre-Islamic era, including themes such as love and wine. Persian poets pioneered wine poetry, wrote about love, and commented on the beauty of women. Wine poetry is one of the hallmarks of Persian literature dating back to ancient Persia. Rassam came along with others who enlightened the Abbasid era with their literary work. Rassam lived at a time when both Arabic and Persian became popular languages for poetry. However, his choice to write in Arabic was motivated by his search for a broader audience. He wrote his earliest poems, including Kalila wa-Dimna, in Arabic. Past literary works had been written mainly in Turkish and Persian languages, rather than in Arabic. In addition, Rassam wanted to distinguish his work from that of fellow poets Ahmad al-Nafis and Ahmad ibn Fadlan. Rassian was a poet of the pre-Islamic era who lived during the first half of the first century AH (7th century AD) on his native land on the banks of Caspian sea called Daranjiya. He wrote many works in both Arabic and Persian languages. His name is mentioned as Rassānī (رسانی) and Ruzeh (رزه). This poet of 'Daraniya' (Daraneh) had an important role in formulating the culture of Iran, both with regards to language and way of thinking. He was born during the first century A.H. and died in the second half of the second century A.H., and was considered as a companion of Al-Mamoun. This poet wrote many works in Arabic and Persian.
